EVANSTON, Ill. - 18th-ranked Northwestern defeated Kent State, 2-1 at the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex in nonconference action, Sunday.

NU sophomore Christine Nannicelli scored the game-winner at 59:52 when she took a pass from senior co-captain Diane Provencher and beat Kent State goalkeeper Jessica Creeden.

The 'Cats (4-3-0) fell behind early in the match when KSU's Andria Close knocked a shot past NU goalie Sherri-Anne Nyberg in the 22nd minute to give the Golden Flashes a 1-0 lead.

Junior Candice Cooper knotted the match at 1-1 in the 43rd minute when she took a touch-pass from freshman Megan Sieberg and beat Creeden on her glove-side.

Kent State (2-5-0) applied heavy offensive pressure in the second half, but were unable to get anything past Nyberg, who stopped seven shots in the second half. She had eight saves for the match.

NU begins Big Ten competition Friday, Sept. 26 when they host the Michigan Wolverines. The match is set to begin at 3:00.
