EVANSTON, Ill. - With the skies opening up over the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex, No. 20 Northwestern opened up the Big Ten schedule with a 3-0 loss to No. 5 Michigan.

Both teams were forced to clear the field on two separate occasions due to lightning in the area.

Michigan (6-3-0, 1-0-0), meanwhile, struck far before the real stuff made its way to the field.

The Wolverines' Jessica Blake scored an unassisted goal less than three minutes into the contest to give Michigan a 1-0 advantage.

A little less than five minutes later, the Wolverines extended their lead to 2-0 when Jill Civic accepted a pass from Lori Hillman off a corner and beat NU goalkeeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg at 6:10.

With 15:21 showing on the game clock, game officials sent the players indoors for the first time.

20 minutes later, play continued and Michigan continued to control the match, holding Northwestern (4-4-0, 0-1-0) to only one shot on goal in the match.

Blake added a second goal at 37:26, extending the Michigan lead to 3-0. Adrienne Hortillosa assisted on the goal.

After a 40-minute rain/lightning delay, Michigan was able to control possession for the majority of the final minutes and held on to the 3-0 lead.

Nyberg, who made a number of acrobatic saves, including one on a penalty stroke, finished with 11 stops.

The 'Cats are back in action Sunday when they face off with Ohio State at 1 p.m. at the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex.
