Northwestern Defeats Tar Heels In Home Opener, 3-0

EVANSTON, Ill. - Senior outside hitter Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland/Tarnobrzeg) led the Wildcats to a 3-0 (30-24, 31-29, 30-28) victory against North Carolina Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. With the win, the Wildcats extend their current winning streak to eight matches and improve to 8-2 on the season, while the Tar Heels fall to 7-3.
Lodzik had an impressive match for Northwestern, recording 22 kills, eight digs, two solo blocks, two block assists and a .378 hitting percentage against the Tar Heels. All-America candidate Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./ Carl Sandburg) added 13 kills, two service aces, four digs, one solo block, three block assists and a hitting percentage of .348. Sophomore Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./East) recorded a double double for the 'Cats with 12 kills and 12 digs. Drew Robertson led the team in assists with 51.
The Tar Heels were led by senior Aletha Green, who recorded 10 kills on 14 attacks with no errors for a .714 hitting percentage. Green also contributed three block assists. Dani Nyenhuis added 15 kills, one service ace, five digs and a .433 hitting percentage. Norma Cortez led North Carolina in assists with 20, while tallying two service aces, three digs and one block assist.
The Wildcats will return to action tomorrow, when they take on the Chicago State Cougars at 9 a.m. and the Florida Gators at 7 p.m.
Earlier in the day on Friday, the Gators and the Cougars squared off, with Florida winning by a score of 3-0 (30-15, 30-16, 30-19). The Gators were led by Michelle Chatman, who recorded 16 kills, four digs, two block assists and hit .609 against the Cougars.
