KENOSHA, Wis. - With one day of Camp Kenosha under their belt, the Northwestern football team turned up the intensity during their three-hour practice session today at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. This morning's practice will be the last in only helmet and shoulder pads as the 'Cats will don the full pads tomorrow.
Of the many goals head coach Randy Walker had coming into camp, his aim of trying to find out which freshmen have the potential to contribute this season took precedence today.
"They (the freshmen) are playing on a field right now that is a lot faster than the one they were on last year," Walker said. "We got a lot of those guys in there and we'll continue to do that tomorrow. The way you find out if a guy is going to be able to contribute is by throwing him in there and seeing how he performs."
Overall, Walker was pleased with the effort his 'Cats put forward and understands that things tend to be a little less organized in the early going than he would like.
"At times we looked a little disheveled, but we'll be alright," he said. "I'm really pleased with the level of physical conditioning we've showed, especially with our guys up front -- they really look good."
Tomorrow's full-pad practice session is scheduled for 9 a.m.
