COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Northwestern women's soccer team fell to Missouri, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Columbia, Mo. The Tigers used a pair of second-half goals to earn the victory and drop NU to 0-2 on the season.
Fighting for the win through a torrential downpour, Northwestern found itself battling not only the TIgers but the weather and field conditions as well. The grass turf quickly became soaked with rain reducing ball mobility and greatly compromising the player's footwork.
Both teams fought through the first half learning to battle the sodden elements. In the second half, Jennifer Nobis put the Tigers on the board with a well-placed header launched from a cornerkick by Karen Bauer.
Missouri then took advantage of the elements to put in a second goal late in the game. An innocent passback by a Northwestern defender became dangerous when it suddenly stopped in a mud puddle. Mizzou forward Kristen Heil was able to catch up to it first, then beat NU goalkeeper Whitney Jones to sink an unhindered goal.
"I thought we played all right, given the conditions," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh. "I felt like the first 15 minutes of the match were really the only soccer of the match, after that it was like watching a bunch of little kids trying to make the best of the situation."
Jones finished the match with seven saves, while Missouri goalkeeper Stephanie Krawczyk had five stops. The Tigers outshot Northwestern, 14-9, although the Wildcats had five corner kicks to Mizzou's three.
Northwestern will be home for the first time this season next weekend, hosting the Wildcat Classic at the Leonard B. Thomas Sports Complex. NU will host Florida Atlantic Friday at 1 p.m., then take on Ohio University Sunday at 3 p.m.
