DURHAM, N.H. - If Northwestern is going to turn head coach Marisa Didio's final season into a fairy tale, the Wildcats certainly went a long way toward starting that Saturday afternoon.
In a neutral-site game played at the University of New Hampshire, the 'Cats twice overcame deficits against a powerful Boston College team and eventually came away with a 3-2 victory in the season opener for both teams.
The Eagles broke into the scoring column first as Sabrina Lazzari found the back of the net to give BC a 1-0 lead. However, Northwestern fought knotted the score on a penalty corner with no time left in the first half. Candice Cooper notched the goal, while Suzi Sutton and Diane Provencher were credited with assists on the play.
BC jumped ahead for the second time when senior Kim French pushed in a goal that was assisted by Kristen Madden. That lead was erased nine minutes later by the Wildcats, who got goals from Meghan Small and Ellen Schlafly within 22 seconds of each other to take the final 3-2 advantage for the win.
Boston College outshot Northwestern by a whopping 27-6 margin and had seven more penalty corners than its opponent. However, Northwestern's freshman goalkeeper, Sherry-Anne Nyberg, sparkled in net as she collected 15 saves in her collegiate debut.
The Wildcats will return to action Monday morning, taking on the University of New Hampshire in a Labor Day matchup.
