KENOSHA, Wis. - If one had to describe the performance of Northwestern's first-team offense in today's scrimmage at Carthage College in a single word, the term "sharp" might be most appropriate. Quarterback Brett Basanez engineered a 65-yard scoring drive in his only series of work and capped the march with a six-yard touchdown strike to Brandon Horn. Basanez was three-of-four on the drive.
With Basanez and a host of other starters getting much of the day off, a number of reserves had the opportunity to take advantage of the increased number of snaps.
Running back Terrell Jordan did just that. He rushed for 50 yards on just five carries and made runs of 18 and 22 yards after he was hit initially behind the line of scrimmage. With starter Jason Wright in Evanston taking the medical school entrance exam, Jordan and fellow running back Derell Jenkins sparked both the first and second offensive units.
Head coach Randy Walker was pleased with his team's overall performance and continued to stress that the preseason is as much a time for the coaches to learn things about their kids as it is for the players to learn the offense.
"I wanted to learn some things. I didn't want to make this a 'gimme scrimmage;' I wanted to challenge us on some things I wanted to look at on both sides of the ball," he said. "I don't put a lot into the outcome; I want to learn from it and grow from it."
Walker continued, "We'll see where we are at on Monday, but we need to have a great week (of practice) next week, but I'm real pleased. We are a much better team at this point this year than last year."
Basanez and backup quarterback Alexander Webb combined to hit seven different receivers. Mark Philmore led the receiving unit with two catches for 38 yards.
