KENOSHA, Wis - After two days in shorts, things got a little more serious for the Northwestern football team in day three at Camp Kenosha as the Wildcats strapped on the full gear for the first time this season for today's three-hour practice session. Head coach Randy Walker was anxious to see how his squad would look with the pads on.
"The first day in pads changes things a bit," Walker said. "It takes some time to get used to doing the same things with everything on."
With many players on the field having only four career-practices under their belt, Walker is pleased with the progress his team has made in learning their system.
"We've thrown a lot at them in these first few days. We've got almost our entire offensive and defensive packages installed already. A lot of heads are still spinning a little bit," he said.
Today's practice plan included a number of very physical drills and it was quite obvious that a number of Wildcats had been waiting to hit someone since last season.
"I have been encouraged by our enthusiasm throughout camp so far," Walker said.
Practice concluded with the annual watermelon-eating contest in which the players from each position nominate one guy to represent them against the other positions. Sophomore linebacker Erryn Cobb won the contest by finishing half of a watermelon first.
Tomorrow will be the first day of double sessions with the morning practice starting at 8 A.M.
