IOWA CITY, Iowa - After waiting 18 innings to get on the scoreboard in their opening game of the Big Ten Tournament, the Northwestern softball team wasted little time in their second game of the day against second-seeded Michigan. NU scored three times in the top of the first to take a 3-0 lead, but the game was halted due to rain and lightning in the bottom half of the inning. Action during the opening day of the tournament has been suspended for the remainder of Thursday. Play will resume Friday morning.
The Wildcats outlasted Michigan State, the three seed, 1-0 in 18 innings in the opening game of the day. When Northwestern's game with Michigan resumes Friday, the 14th-ranked Wolverines will have a runner on first base with no one out in the bottom of the first.
The 'Cats jumped on Big Ten Player of the Year Marissa Young for three runs on four hits in the first. Cindy Muran (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) recorded an RBI double, scoring Brett Nakabayashi (Irvine, Calif./Irvine). Two batters later, Robyn Pettinger (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) followed with a two-run double of her own, bringing home Erin Mobley (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) and Muran.
