BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Hoosier starter Chris Behrens struck out a season-high seven Wildcats as Indiana defeated Northwestern 7-0 in Friday's series opener at Sembower Field in Bloomington, Ind. Behrens scattered five hits, as the to Wildcats fall 24-22 overall, 14-13 in the Big Ten.
The Big Ten's best hitter, Indiana's Vasili Spanos, slapped a two-RBI triple down the right-field line to open the scoring for the Hoosiers in the bottom of the third inning. Spanos's triple was quickly followed by a two-run home run over the left-field fence, giving IU a 4-0 lead after three complete innings.
Indiana tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third as a two-out double and a single to center scored runs.
The Hoosiers continued to pour it on, as Wildcat reliever Evan Blesoff (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) was touched for a run in the bottom of the sixth. Blesoff replaced starter J.A. Happ (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) at the start of the sixth inning.
Offensively, shortstop Jon Mikrut (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) was 3-for-3 in the game, hitting his 13th double of the season in the top of the ninth.
Happ threw five complete innings, giving up six runs on nine hits. He did strike out seven, to raise his season total to 91 in 78.2 innings pitched.
Blesoff gave up just one single in the final two innings.
The Wildcats will look for revenge tomorrow, as the two teams meet for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
