BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Northwestern salvaged a Sunday split with Indiana, winning game two 5-3 at Sembower Field in Bloomington, Ind. The Wildcats lost the first game 11-9. NU plated two runs in the first and third innings, to hold on for the win. The win puts NU in fifth place of the Big Ten standings for next week's Big Ten Tournament with a 15-14 conference record. NU is 25-23 overall.

The Wildcats will face Penn State in the first round of the tournament. Game time is set for 12:05 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Siebert Field in Minneapolis, Minn. The Gophers won 3-of-4 from Ohio State over the weekend, earning the right to host the annual event. The Big Ten regular-season champion hosts the event as Minnesota has won the last two regular-season titles.

In the game, junior center fielder David Gresky (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) hit a one-out single to right field and quickly rounded the bases on shortstop Jon Mikrut's (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel) third triple of the season. The sophomore trotted the final 90-feet home when first baseman Jason Krynski (Niles, Ill./Niles West) hit a double to almost the exact same spot as Mikrut's triple. Krynski's double was his third of the season.

NU tacked on two mores run in the top of the third as Krynski drove in his second run of the game with a single to center. Gresky scored on the hit after reaching base on a walk. The second run crossed the plate when Dan Pohlman's (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) infield single was thrown away, allowing Krynski to score from third.

IU scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth as a two-out two-RBI double brought the Hoosiers to within one at 4-3. Third baseman Anthony Wycklendt (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) ended the Indiana threat, as he caught a foul ball falling into the Hoosier dugout.

The Wildcats extended their lead to 5-3 when senior Eric Roeder (Onsted, Mich./Onsted) hit a single up the middle to score Pohlman from second. Pohlman reached on a walk and moved to second on Wycklendt's single to left. Roeder was cut down at second base trying to advance an extra base after the throw to the plate was late.

Starting Wildcat pitcher Mark Ori (Niles, Ill./Maine South) improved his record to 3-1, pitching six complete innings, giving up three runs on five hits. Mikrut recorded his fifth save of the season, throwing a perfect seventh inning.

NU's 15 wins in conference action ties for the most regular-season conference wins in school history. It is the sixth time a Wildcat team has won 15 games, all coming in head coach Paul Stevens tenure.
