April 24, 2003
EVANSTON, Ill. - Ninth-seeded Northwestern started strong, taking the doubles point for an early 1-0 lead, but eighth-seeded Indiana rallied in singles play en route to a 4-1 win Thursday in the first round of the 2003 Big Ten Men's Tennis Championship. With the loss, NU dropped to 10-12 overall, while IU improved to 12-10.
Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake) and Adam Schaechterle (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine) blanked the Hoosiers' Jakub Praibis and Petr Novotny, 8-0, at No. 3 doubles. Seniors Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) and Russell Bennett (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) gave NU the lead with an 8-4 win over John Stone and Ryan Recht.
But the Hoosiers controlled the match thereafter, as Praibis, Recht, Novotny and Viktor Libal each garnered straight-set wins. IU will face top-seeded Illinois on Friday at 10 a.m.
NU now awaits the selections for the 2003 NCAA Championships, which will be held next week. The honorees for 2003 All-Big Ten will also be announced later this evening.
