'Cats Tame Nittany Lions, 5-2

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern defeated Penn State, 5-2, Saturday at the Combe Tennis Center. NU took the doubles point and held onto the lead for good, winning four of the six singles matches. With the win, NU, which won its second straight Big Ten dual, improved to 10-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Sophomore Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) was in the midst of a heated battle with Nate Emge when the PSU freshman went down with a knee injury with the score knotted at 4-4 in the second set. Emge could not continue, giving the 'Cats a 3-0 cushion.
Fittingly, senior Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) clinched the match for NU on Senior Day. Axler defeated Malcolm Scatliffe in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3. Classmate Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake) also picked up a win, downing the Nittany Lions' Mark Barry, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2 singles.
Sophomore Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) went the distance for NU's other singles win, upending Roddy Cantey, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Hanus and Perrin paired up at No. 1 singles to take down Roddy Cantey and Clint Keithley, 9-7. Axler paired with senior Russell Bennett (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) for an 8-3 win against Brad Nudell and Scatliffe.
NU returns to action Sunday against No. 24 Ohio State. Match time is set for noon Central time at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center, if weather permits. The match will be moved indoors to the Combe Tennis Center if necessary.
