NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Northwestern women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-8 decision at Vanderbilt Tuesday night, the Wildcats' second straight American Lacrosse Conference loss after a 5-0 overall start to the regular season.
The 19th-ranked Wildcats were down just 7-5 at halftime, and the score was just 9-7 with 15 minutes left in the contest. At that point 20th-ranked Vandy -- the defending ALC champion -- ripped off four unanswered goals to put the game away.
"I think we were right in this game for a long time, but it was difficult because we were behind the whole way," said NU head coach Kelly Amonte Hiller. "Vanderbilt did a good job of taking advantage of its opportunities down the stretch, but I feel like the effort we put forth will help us down the road as we continue to play ranked teams."
Courtney Flynn led the way for Northwestern with three goals, while twin sister Erin Flynn had two goals. Junior Angela McMahon had a goal and an assist.
NU drew first blood Tuesday night when C. Flynn scored five minutes into the game. That lead held for three minutes, but then the Commodores scored three goals to take a lead they would never relinquish.
The 'Cats were down 7-3 late in the half, but Jenny Bush scored with 19 seconds left and then C. Flynn converted a feed from McMahon with just 00.9 left on the clock to send the team to the benches with Vandy up 7-5.
McMahon drew Northwestern within 7-6 with 23 minutes left in the game, and C. Flynn answered two Vanderbilt goals to keep it a two-goal contest before the Commodores' insurmountable run.
Lindsey Munday had NU's final goal, with 3:14 to play.
At the other end, Ashley Gersuk had seven saves in the NU goal.
Northwestern will be in action again Friday, taking on No. 18 Johns Hopkins. That game is scheduled to take place in Nashville at 1 p.m. CST.
