EVANSTON, Ill. -- A 12-game schedule, which includes one of the most attractive home slates in the nation, awaits Northwestern's 2003 football program. Five of the Wildcats' six home foes are coming off bowl appearances in 2002 and all six had winning records. (Only Florida State, Oregon State and Arizona are playing more bowl teams (six) at home in 2003.) Overall, the 'Cats are facing seven teams that were invited to postseason play last year.
All four Big Ten home opponents -- Minnesota, Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan -- played in a bowl game. Additionally, two of the four league road opponents went to bowl contests -- Ohio State and Purdue. The Wildcats open Big Ten action on the road Sept. 27 against the Buckeyes, who were crowned national champions after defeating Miami (Fla.) in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
In nonconference action, the Wildcats face road tests at Kansas and Duke, and home games vs. Air Force and Miami (Ohio). The Wildcats' home opener is Sept. 6 vs. Air Force, another 2002 bowl qualifier.
"This is a challenging schedule," said Northwestern head coach Randy Walker. "There are few schools in the country that can tout a set of home games like this. In addition to the Big Ten schedule, we also play two tradition-rich programs in Air Force and Miami. Both of those programs will be contenders for their respective conference championships."
This will be Walker's second meeting against his alma mater (Miami) and the school where he served as head coach (1990-98). He is Miami's winningest football coach.
Northwestern has kept season ticket pricing the same as last year and has added three partial season ticket plans. Regular reserved season tickets sell at $170-a $50 savings from single game ticket prices. Additionally, NU will once again offer end zone season tickets at a further discounted price of $120. A season-long family plan of two adult tickets and three youth tickets is available at $360. Season tickets are now on sale, by visiting NUsports.com or calling 847-491-CATS.
Each of the partial season plans or "Three Packs" are priced at $90 and include three games. Three Pack #1 offers Air Force, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Three Pack #2 is Miami, Minnesota and Penn State. The final Three Pack includes Air Force, Miami and Michigan. Three Pack plans go on sale May 5.
Nonconference single game tickets will once again be priced at $30 and go on public sale July 1. Big Ten single game tickets will be priced at $40 with sales to the general public beginning August 25.
The Wildcats, who recently finished their winter conditioning program, begin spring practice Tuesday, April 1. Those drills conclude Saturday, April 26 with the annual Spring Game Presented by Yellow Book USA (weather permitting). Kickoff is set for noon.
