COLUMBUS, Ohio - Velimir Radinovic scored five of his 12 points during a 17-3 second-half run as Ohio State beat Northwestern 65-52 on Saturday.
The Buckeyes (10-9, 3-5 Big Ten) were led by Brent Darby, who scored 15 points. Sean Connolly had 13 and Zach Williams added 11.
Northwestern (8-10, 0-7) was led by Aaron Jennings, who had 15 points. Winston Blake added 14, his season high, as he had his third straight standout performance at Value City Arena -- he had 22 points there as a sophomore, and a career-high 25 last season.
Northwestern was content to shoot 3-pointers instead of going inside. The Wildcats shot a school-record 36 3-pointers -- making 10 -- while hitting 9 of just 20 shots inside the arc.
With Northwestern offering only token resistance on the boards, Ohio State took a different tack by going inside. The result was complete one-sidedness at the foul line -- the Buckeyes took 29 free throws (making 20), while NU shot just 10 freebies (making four).
OSU also outrebounded the Wildcats 45-26, as Radinovic and Williams each had 10 boards.
The Buckeyes led 36-32 after Jennings scored on a 10-footer jumper with 16:54 left. Over the next nine minutes, Ohio State scored 17 of 20 points to take control by consistently working the ball down low.
Radinovic started the spurt with a pair of free throws. Connolly added five points and Williams had three before Darby scored his only points of the surge on a jumper from the lane at the 7:57 mark to make it 53-35.
Northwestern looked good early in the game, and held a 23-18 lead with just under six minutes to play in the first half. But Ohio State outscored the Wildcats 14-4 to take a 32-27 lead into the break.
Northwestern is home for the first time in more than two weeks Wednesday night, hosting Indiana at 8 p.m. CST. The Wildcats, who began the Big Ten season with five of seven games on the road, will be home for three straight and six of eight over the next month.
