CHICAGO (AP) - Aaron Carr scored 21 points as Illinois-Chicago defeated Northwestern 90-71 Saturday night at the UIC Pavilion.
Armond Williams and Cedrick Banks each added 20 points for Illinois-Chicago (9-2), which shot a torrid 62 percent from the field for the game. The Flames were indeed white-hot, knocking down 10 three-pointers and shooting 56 percent beyond the arc.
Northwestern was led by senior Jitim Young (a game-high 27 points) and Vedran Vukusic (23 points), but the duo received little help from the rest of its cast -- Mohamed Hachad, Evan Seacat and Vince Scott were next on the scoring chart with five points apiece.
Despite the imbalance, the Wildcats were in this game through a half -- in fact, UIC led just 43-41 at the break. However, Martell Bailey hit a jumper on the first possession of the second stanza, and that set the tone for a 16-4 run by the Flames.
The game marked the most points NU has scored in a loss during the Bill Carmody era; the previous high was 70 in a loss to Michigan last season. Overall, NU entered the contest with a 15-1 record under Carmody when reaching the 70-point mark.
Northwestern is off until next weekend, when the Wildcats travel to El Paso, Texas, for the Sierra Providence SunClassic. The Wildcats will tip off with Rutgers in the second game Saturday, scheduled for 10 p.m. CST; the consolation and championship games will take place at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. CST. UTEP and Mississippi Valley State are the other two teams in the tournament.
