EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern head swimming and diving coach Bob Groseth has announced the promotion of Sergio Lopez from assistant coach to associate head coach. Lopez will handle all aspects of Northwestern's recruiting and will coach the stroke event swimmers.

Groseth is excited about Lopez's new role and feels as though his new associate head coach has a very bright future in Evanston.

"Sergio is one of the finest young coaches in the country. Considered an expert in Breaststroke, he has produced Big Ten Champions in butterfly, backstroke and individual medley," Groseth said. "This promotion should stabilize our staff and insure continuity in developing teams that consistently place high in the Big Ten Conference, have a strong presence at the NCAA Championships and develop individuals that compete at the highest International level. I look forward to working with Sergio and seeing just how far we can take this program."

Lopez came to NU from his position as head coach of the Hillenbrand Aquatics Club in Tucson, Ariz. in Lopez is also a top-notch swimmer, having been a two-time Olympian and former European record-holder. Swimming for Spain, he captured bronze in the 1988 Olympics and fourth place in 1992 in the 200-meter breastroke. He is the former European and U.S. Open record holder in that event, and from 1986-96 he was world ranked in six separate events.

Lopez attended Indiana before transferring to American University, from which he graduated in 1992. He was a nine-time collegiate All-American in the breast and IM events. Lopez and his wife, Sandy, are the parents of daughter Harley and son Cobi.
