ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) - Delonte Holland scored a career-high 27 points and Quemont Greer added 15 more and nine rebounds as DePaul defeated Northwestern 65-53 Tuesday night at Allstate Arena.
In the first regular-season meeting between these two city rivals since 1997, Jitim Young led Northwestern (1-2) with 23 points, 17 of which came in the second half. Vedran Vukusic added 16 and was the only other 'Cat in double figures.
Holland was simply outstanding in the game, going 10-of-13 from the field including 3-for-3 from 3-point range. He scored 13 points in the first four minutes of the game en route to winning the Waldo Fisher-Frank McGrath Award as the game's MVP. The award is presented each time the two schools play by a vote of attending media.
DePaul (2-0) went on a 13-4 run early in the first half, turning an 8-7 deficit into a 20-12 lead, and Northwestern never recovered. The lead bulged to as much as 17, before Northwestern used a 7-0 run to end the half down just 10, 35-25. A quick bucket by Vukusic started the second half, and suddenly the 'Cats were down just eight.
