EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's Matt Grevers was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for the week Nov. 23 after an incredible weekend at the Purdue Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.

Grevers notched an automatic NCAA qualifying time and two NCAA "B" standard times as he collected three first-place finishes at the Purdue Invitational this past weekend.

The freshman recorded the automatic qualifying time of 43.53 in the 100-yard freestyle, and consideration times in the 50-yard freestyle (20.05) and 100-yard backstroke (47.64).

All three individual events broke pool records, and he was also a member of the 200-and 400-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay that broke pool records.

Additionally, he was a member of the first-place 200-yard medley relay squad. Grevers set a number of pool records in preliminary rounds at the Purude Invite, but the marks were either beaten by himself or his teammates in the finals heat.

He broke the pool record in the 100 back during the first leg of the 400 medley relay only to best his own mark in the individual 100 back event. He set a pool record in a preliminary heat of the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:50.25, but classmate Mike Alexandrov beat the mark in the next race with a time of 1:48.51. Ironically enough, Wildcat swimmer Mark Hamming ultimately swam the meet's best time with a record-breaking mark of 1:48.12.

This is the first Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor in Grevers' young career and it is the first time this season a Wildcat swimmer has collected weekly honors.
