MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Two weeks ago, Northwestern was coming off a win over a nationally ranked opponent and looking forward to possibly earning a spot in next weekend's Big Ten Tournament.
What a difference a few weeks can make.
Sunday afternoon, Northwestern outshot Wisconsin-Milwaukee by a staggering 14-3 count, yet at the end of the match all the Wildcats had to show for it was their fourth straight loss -- the Panthers were able to score two times to erase an early deficit and gain a 2-1 victory.
"This weekend has just been unbelievable," said NU head coach Jenny Haigh, who saw her team end its season with a 7-10-1 record.
Unbelievable, indeed. The Wildcats entered a match at Marquette Friday still entertaining some hope of an NCAA bid. However, on a weekend when the 'Cats outshot two opponents by a combined 35-16 they came away with two losses.
Sunday's match was perhaps the more galling of the two. NU outshot Milwaukee 10-1 in the first half, and got on the board in the 12th minute when Aileen Guiney scored an unassisted goal.
The Panthers' (9-8-1) only shot of the half came with 1:19 left -- however, it found the mark and made the score 1-1. Elizabeth Chudy was the scorer, finishing a pass from Ginny Graczyk.
Chudy then provided the winner in the second half; her goal came off a pass from Erin Shaughnessy in the 64th minute. Northwestern outshot UWM 4-2 in the second stanza, but could not gain the equalizer.
