IOWA CITY, Iowa - Big Ten wins have not come easy for Northwestern this season, but head coach Keylor Chan and his squad are hoping that wins will not be as evasive after Saturday night's win at Iowa, the Wildcats' first conference win of 2003. The 3-0 (30-16, 30-19, 30-22) sweep improves NU's record to 10-6 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten.
The 'Cats came out roaring in game one with three players registering greater than a .600 hitting percentage. Iwona Lodzik led the group with .714, Jill Buschur followed with .667, and Erika Lange rounded the group out with .625. Sophomore Christie Gardner perhaps had her strongest game of the season, serving for 12 consecutive points including two service aces, plus four digs in the game. NU took the game by the score of 30-16.
"Christy played extremely well tonight and Erika broke out to play like she did for us in nonconference matches," said Chan. "The girls all played well and it was a great road win. We needed it and now look forward to next weekend at home."
Lodzik kept things rolling in the second, adding five digs in the middle game. The Wildcats held the Hawkeyes to a .066 hitting percentage through the opening games, countering with a team average of .370. Though both teams battled for the lead through the first 19 points, Northwestern closed the gap and pulled away, taking game two 30-19. Freshman Lauren Greenwood was substituted in late in the game and served the final five points of the game for the win.
"It was great to see Lauren come off of the bench and play well," said Chan. "She has definitely earned the playing time."
Though the Hawkeyes managed 22 points in the final game, the 'Cats kept their composure for the sweep. Down 3-1 early, NU grabbed the 10-6 lead with Drew Robertson serving. Robertson, who earned 44 assists in the game with two kills, added four of her nine match digs in the third game.
"Drew is a great leader for us on and off the court," said Chan. "She helped lead us early on and kept the momentum going when we needed it."
Greenwood again served for the win in game three.
Overall, Lange led the Wildcats with a .565 hitting percentage and Lodzik followed with 14 digs and a .407 average. Gardner added 11 digs. Iowa was held to a .062 average, 32 kills and 39 digs.
The Wildcats are back home next weekend, hosting Ohio State on Friday and Penn State on Saturday. Game time is set for 7 p.m. both nights.
