BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Tom Coverdale had 19 points and 10 assists, and Kyle Hornsby added a career-high 19 points to lead No. 18 Indiana past Northwestern 71-57 on Wednesday night.
The Hoosiers won Wednesday without leading scorer Bracey Wright, who had a sore back. Wright was averaging 19.0 points and had scored in double figures in the Hoosiers' first 14 games -- the most by an Indiana freshman to open a career.
Northwestern could not capitalize, however, missing its first five shots which allowed Indiana to score the game's first 11 points.
The Hoosiers extended their lead to 18-5 and led 34-22 at halftime, thanks to six 3-pointers including four from Hornsby. He finished with five treys, tying his career high.
Indiana scored seven straight points in 48 seconds early in the second half to make it 43-24, and when Coverdale hit his second trifecta of the game with 13:06 left, he became the 37th Hoosier to reach 1,000 points in his career. Coverdale now has 1,015 points.
Northwestern closed to 55-43 with about five minutes to play, but Coverdale sealed the victory by hitting three 3-pointers. He had six treys.
The Wildcats were led by Jason Burke with 14 points and T.J. Parker with 12. Jitim Young added 10.
Northwestern hit 10 three-pointers.
The Wildcats are back home Saturday afternoon, hosting a red-hot Michigan team at 1 p.m. The Wolverines come to Evanston having won 10 straight after starting the season 0-6.
