EVANSTON, Ill. - After two games in Big Ten play, Northwestern is 0-2. However, the Wildcats are not that far from being 2-0.
In the opener last Wednesday, NU whittled a double-digit Iowa lead to two points in the final minute, and had three chances to tie or take the lead with three-pointers. However, all three efforts were off the mark, and the Hawkeyes escaped Welsh-Ryan Arena with a 68-63 win.
Saturday at Purdue, the Wildcats again showed their resilience. Down to the Boilermakers by 10 midway through the second half, NU cut the lead to 64-60; the 'Cats then withstood another 7-0 Purdue run to get within six points (72-66) with less than two minutes to play. However, the foul parade began at that point, and while the Boilers knocked down 10 straight free throws the Wildcats missed five consecutive shots from beyond the arc. A final layup at the end wrapped up a 14-point loss in a game that was much closer than the final score indicates.
"We have not yet found a way to win," said head coach Bill Carmody. "Against Iowa we went to three guys in an attempt to win the game and none of them delivered. We have to find a way."
Tonight's situation does not make things any easier for the Wildcats: Indiana (NU's first ranked opponent this season), on the road at Assembly Hall.
"They are experienced winners," said Carmody. "They made it to the NCAA final last year, and they have played in a lot of big games already this season."
