EAST LANSING, Mich. - Northwestern came up short against No. 22 Michigan State, 1-0, in its Big Ten opener on Sunday in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans' Craig Hearn put in the game-winning goal late in the first half, and the Wildcats' rally came up short.

J.D. Martin (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) had another strong showing, making eight saves on 15 Spartan shots.

The Wildcats were outshot 7-0 in the first half, and Hearn capitalized for the Spartans at the 36:19 mark.

NU fought back in the second frame, getting six shots. MSU's Tyler Robinson made four saves, though, to hold on for the win.

Northwestern (4-5, 0-1) is back in action on Oct. 4 against Penn State at 4 p.m. at Lakeside Field.
