EVANSTON, Ill. - With its big gun out of the lineup, Northwestern's women's volleyball team battled to a 1-1 record on the final day of the Wildcat Classic at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Wildcats opened the day with a loss to Loyola-Chicago 21-30, 24-30, 30-23, 23-30, but responded to defeat Harvard in the nightcap 30-23, 30-23, 30-32, 30-21.
Northwestern (7-5 overall) was without the services of junior middle blocker Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill.) who sprained her knee against DePaul on Friday night.
In her place, a number of Wildcats stepped up their efforts, namely freshman Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis.) and senior Sarah Ballog (Coto de Caza, Calif.), both of whom were named to the all-tournament team.
In the victory over Harvard (1-6), Ballog and Gardner recorded 17 kills apiece while Ballog added six block assists. Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland) added 16 kills and 19 digs while Drew Robertson totaled 54 set assists.
Northwestern totaled 24 block assists in the match compared to four for the Crimson.
The alarm clock may have failed to go off for the Wildcats in the opening match of the day as Loyola-Chicago (7-3) jumped on the hosts to post the victory.
Gardner, Ballog and Brandy Stohl (Colona, Ill.) each recorded 10 kills for Northwestern, while Gardner, Lodzik and Robertson posted 12 digs apiece.
The Ramblers outhit the Wildcats .245 to .145 in the match.
Northwestern will return to action on Friday when it opens up Big Ten play at Illinois and then travels to Purdue on Sunday.
