EVANSTON, Ill. - Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland), a junior outside hitter, has been named the Big Ten Volleyball Player of the Week for Sept. 2. She is the first Northwestern volleyball player to earn the honor since Carmen Burbach did so on Oct. 20, 1997.
Lodzik burst onto the scene in her first weekend with the Wildcats, earning tournament MVP honors at the Spring Hill Suites Invitational in Charlotte, N.C.
A junior college transfer from Triton College (Ill.), Lodzik posted a double-double with 16 kills and 18 digs in Northwestern's opening match against SMU. She followed that effort with 12 kills against East Tennessee State and 14 against Charlotte.
Lodzik averaged 4.7 kills and 3.8 blocks per game, had a .400 hitting percentage and recorded 10 service aces in nine games.
Northwestern swept all three of its matches, winning nine straight games to capture the tournament title. The Wildcats return to action this weekend when they travel to the University of San Diego Invitational.
