EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's field hockey team evened its record at 1-1 with a 4-1 victory over the University of New Hampshire Monday afternoon at NU's Lakeside Field. Head coach Marisa Didio -who graduated from UNH-guided her team to a 3-1 halftime lead as three different Wildcats found the back of the New Hampshire goal.
"I was really pleased with the way we played as a team today," said Didio. "I like the way we improved and adjusted from our season opener (against Maryland). I was also happy to see us adjust on the fly during the game, taking the game to them instead of vice-versa."
Taking the game to them started in the 14th-minute of play when freshman Holly Palin (Mequon, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) took a quick pass from junior Suzi Sutton (York, Pa./Dallastown) and slammed it into the bottom right corner for a 1-0 lead. But, UNH responded quickly as Marcie Boyer beat NU goalkeeper Kelly Augustine (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) on a direct corner, tying the score.
With the score tied 1-1. NU took control of the game, scoring two goals in the next eight minutes to take a commanding 3-1 lead. NU never looked back, adding an insurance goal midway through the second period to complete the scoring.
Senior Lindsey Millard (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day) and Palin tallied the final two goals of the first half with sophomore Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) tattooing her first goal of the season in the second.
Sutton picked up her second assist of the game, hitting Cooper from outside the circle. Palin, a Wisconsin native, leads the team with five points (two goals, one assist) this season.
NU is back in action this Friday, hosting the Virginia Cavaliers at Lakeside Field on the NU campus. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
