Northwestern begins its fall tennis season this weekend at the Notre Dame Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. NU is set to play Harvard, Brown and Maryland on Friday, Sept. 20. The Saturday and Sunday match-ups are to be determined. No team results will be recorded, as the Invitational is an individual tournament.

"This is a good opportunity for our guys to get some extra matches in this fall," said NU Head Coach Paul Torricelli. "We only had one day of team practice before this weekend so it is a chance to see where we stand."

Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) returns as the 'Cats' leader in singles wins from 2002. In his first collegiate season, Hanus posted a 20-13 record that earned him ITA Region IV Rookie of the Year and Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors.

Senior Josh Axler (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) also returns from a 20-13 singles campaign, including a team-best 7-4 Big Ten mark.

The Wildcats' doubles play should continue to improve in 2003. Hanus and Russell Bennett (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) are back together after posting a 7-8 mark last season, and Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake) and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) return from a 7-9 record.
