Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. - A pair of women making their collegiate debuts scored Friday afternoon, leading the Northwestern women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over DePaul at Lakeside Field. The match was the season opener for both teams.

Northwestern has now won five straight regular-season matches dating back to last season, and all of those wins have come via the shutout route.

The first half was indicative of an opening match, as both sides were tentative and a little sloppy. However, the second half saw the match pick up, and it was Northwestern that took advantage.

In the 53rd minute, sophomore Ashleigh Garmon (Oxnard, Calif./Buena) fired a shot from about 20 yards out that DePaul goalkeeper Lindsey Deason dove to save. Deason left a rebound, however, and freshman Nell Compernolle (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) swooped in and fired home a shot just past Deason's right.

Sixteen minutes later, freshman Tabitha Lowey (Peachtree City, Ga./Mcintosh) made the score 2-0 on a pretty goal. Senior Aileen Guiney (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) sent a free kick from the left side into the box, where Lowey headed it in traffic back across the goal and inside the far post.

It was Guiney's eighth career assist, which puts her ninth on NU's all-time list. After that it was left to the NU defense, which kept DePaul at bay. Senior Susie McCreery (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) made just two saves to post the shutout. Northwestern is off until Thursday, when they play at the University of Utah.
