With the temperature in the upper 70s and the sun shining, the seniors made their presence felt throughout Northwestern's third day in full pads at UW-Parkside.

It didn't take long for Jon Schweighardt (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) to make his mark. Minutes after drills ended and team play began, Schweighardt broke down the right sideline and made a diving 30-yard catch. He would go on to make a 25-yard reception and a 45-yard catch in seven-on-seven drills.

"Jon's playing really well," said NU Head Coach Randy Walker. "He doesn't say too much, but he is our quiet leader. He just goes out everyday and makes plays. We wanted the offense to get him the ball more, and today we did that."

Kevin Lawrence (Montreal, Que./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) was suited up in silver after having a good go-around yesterday. The Wildcats' leading returning rusher kept up the trend today with a 70-yard run for a touchdown.

"A lot of guys are growing," Walker said. "The individual efforts are going in the right direction. Now we just have to get all 11 guys there. It'll take time, but we'll get there."

The defense's shining moment perhaps came at the end of the day. As practice wrapped up and the coaches talked amongst themselves, Pat Durr (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles) and Raheem Covington (Pine Hill, N.J./Overbrook) rallied the squad for a post-practice pep talk about upcoming dates, including tomorrow's first open scrimmage of the year.

"I see some really good things," Walker said. "Pat (Durr) and Raheem (Covington) just stepped up and did that without any encouragement from the coaches. From a leadership standpoint, I am really impressed by our guys."

CAMP NOTES: Saturday's scrimmage, originally scheduled for 1 p.m., has been changed to 11 a.m. The Wildcats are trying to beat some potential storms that are predicted to move through lower Wisconsin Saturday afternoon ... The all-star game, sponsored by Florida Citrus Sports, is scheduled for Jan. 25, 2003.
