EVANSTON, Ill. - The Big Ten Conference has announced the roster for the 2002 Big Ten Men's Basketball Foreign Touring Team, and Northwestern's Winston Blake is one of the 12 players who will join the team.
The Big Ten Men's Basketball Foreign Touring Team -- which will be headed by Illinois head coach Bill Self -- will be in Europe from August 8-18 and play five games against teams from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Blake is making his first appearance on the team. Last season, he led the Wildcats in scoring with 13.6 points per game, which was good for 12th overall among Big Ten players. In addition, he was third among all conference players with 2.38 three-pointers made per game, hitting 69 which is fifth on NU's all-time single-season list. With one full season still to play, Blake is second on the Wildcats' all-time list with 169 treys and needs 36 to break the school mark.
The Big Ten Team will open up play on August 10 against the Rheinenergy Basketball Club in Cologne, Germany. The next day, they will be in Bonn for a meeting with the Telecom Basketball Club. The team departs for Belgium on August 12 for a game the next day against the Lelge Basketball Club, and then on August 15 vs. Spirou Charleroi Basketball Club. The tour ends in Amsterdam and an August 17 game vs. Ricoh Astronauts Basketball Club.
The Big Ten Team will feature another player with Wildcat pedigree. Ben Johnson, who transfered to Minnesota in 2001 following two seasons at Northwestern, will represent the Gophers. Each school in the Big Ten has one player on the Big Ten Foreign Touring Team except for Illinois, which has two.
