EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern men's swimming head coach Bob Groseth has been selected to receive the College Swim Coaches Association of America's 2002 Richard E. Steadman Award.

The award, created in 1991, is named for the former CSCAA president and leader of the International Swimming Hall of Fame. According to the group, "the award is conferred annually to a swimming or diving coach who, in the opinion of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, Inc. and the CSCAA Forum, has done the most to spread joy and happiness in Coach Steadman's beloved sport of swimming and diving."

In his 13th season as head coach of the Wildcats, Groseth guided the team to a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships and a 19th-place showing at the NCAA Championships-the best results for the program in more than five decades. During the season, NU also garnered its first-ever national ranking in the CSCAA Top-25 Poll, finishing the year at No. 25. The team posted a 6-1 record in dual meets.

Groseth was named the 2001-02 Big Ten Co-Coach of the Year at the Big Ten Championships in February, the first NU men's swimming coach to earn the title.

This season, several swimmers also made an individual impact. Groseth trained two All-Americans, the Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships, two All-Big Ten selections, and nine Academic All-Big Ten honorees.

Groseth will receive his award at the annual CSCAA National Convention, which takes place in Tampa Bay, Fla. from May 20-22.
