CHICAGO, Ill. - The Northwestern softball team (24-16-1) swept regional opponent Illinois-Chicago in a twilight doubleheader at Flames Field on Thursday. The Wildcats shutout the Flames in Game 1, 6-0, then run-ruled them in the nightcap, 13-4.
The 'Cats won Game 1 behind a strong pitching performance by Lauren Schwendimann. The right-hander tossed her sixth complete game shutout of the year, while striking out a season-high 12 and allowing no walks. The only batter of the game to reach second base was the Flames' first hitter of the game. After that, Schwendimann sat down the next nine batters in order. The win improves her to 16-5 on the season. Schwendimann helped her own cause on the offensive side by hitting her first career grand slam in the fifth inning. The junior now has four long balls on the year.
The 'Cats opened the scoring in the top of the third when Gretchen Barnes hit a basses loaded single to right field, scoring J.C. Kira and Rane Gunderson.
NU tagged the UIC pitching staff for six runs on 10 hits, while also taking advantage of two Flame errors. Every Wildcat except Game 2's starting pitcher, made an appearance in the first game.
The Wildcats lit up the scoreboard in Game 2 with 13 runs on 14 hits. Ten 'Cats reached base safely in the game, including Jenny Glonke, who singled in her first collegiate at-bat.
Freshman Erin Mobley began the scoring barrage with a two-run home run in the second inning. The home run was the fourth of her career and also helped tie the team record from home runs in a season with 25, set back in 2000.
The 'Cats kept rolling, scoring two in the third, four in the fourth and five in the fifth.
Brie Brown picks up her ninth win of the year, pitching five innings and allowing just three earned runs.
Erin Jancic was 5-for-8 on the day to lead the offense. The performance raises her average to .341.
The 'Cats return to conference action this weekend with single games against No. 22 Iowa on Saturday and Sunday. One win against the Hawkeyes and the 'Cats will earn a bid into the six-team Big Ten Tournament.
