CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The thrill of making the NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament quickly disappeared for Northwestern, as the team was blanked 4-0 by No. 38 Indiana State Saturday in the opening Round of 64.

The No. 45 Wildcats end the 2001-02 campaign with a 13-10 overall record and a 6-4 mark in the Big Ten Conference.

Though NU looked more solid in doubles play than in recent matches, ISU took the doubles point with victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions.

Head coach Paul Torricelli shifted the doubles lineup dramatically for this match, pairing Russell Bennett (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and Ryan Edlefsen (Eden Prairie, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) at the No. 1 position, Joost Hol (Newport Beach, Calif./Foothill) and Jackie Jenkins (College Park, Ga./Westlake) at the No. 2 spot, and Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and Chuck Perrin (Atlanta, Ga./The Walker School) at the No. 3 doubles position. Bennett and Edlefsen, who had only teamed up for two other matches this season, defeated Stefan Hirn and David O'Connell 8-2.

The singles lineup also saw a minor change. Hol, who had won three of his last four matches, did not compete.

Hanus, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, was quickly defeated by No. 78 Vedran Vidovic 6-0, 6-4. At the No. 2 spot, Hirn avenged the doubles loss against Edlefsen with a 6-2, 6-3 win over the senior. Josh Axler's (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) loss at the No. 4 spot to O'Connell clinched ISU's victory.

Singles matches at the Nos. 3, 4 and 6 positions were abandoned. Of those matches, only Perrin had the upper hand against his opponent, 6-4, 4-5, when the match was called.
