WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Northwestern remained undefeated in the Big Ten with a 7-4 win over Purdue at the Purdue Varsity Softball Complex Saturday afternoon. The win ups NU's record to 13-8-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The loss drops Purdue to 27-13 overall and 0-4 in the Big Ten.
The Wildcats took advantage of three Boilermaker errors in the first inning to score four runs on just three hits. Purdue committed four errors in Saturday's game and another two in the series opener.
The 'Cats added two more runs in the second when Gretchen Barnes hit a two-run RBI back up the middle, scoring Erin Jancic and Brett Nakabayashi. Jancic had reached base with a double down the left field line. The two-bagger was the 31st of Jancic's career, moving her into a fourth-place tie on NU's all-time doubles list. Anne Carpenter (1991-1994) holds the record with 34. The run was also the 100th of Jancic's career, five shy of Katie Ballman's career record.
Brie Brown got the start in the circle for NU, picking up her fourth win. She allowed just five hits in five innings of work.
Purdue did not go away quietly as they scored three runs in the sixth, but Lauren Schwendimann came in on relief to halt the Boilermaker late-inning comeback. Schwendimann pitched two innings, giving up one hit.
The 'Cats got right back on the bus after the game as they headed to Champaign for a noon doubleheader with Illinois on Sunday.
