IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The first Big Ten road trip of the season for the No. 37 Northwestern men's tennis team proved costly, with a shutout loss to No. 3 Illinois Thursday followed by another loss to unranked Iowa Saturday.

The Wildcats, who came into the week's matches with a perfect 4-0 conference record, dropped to 11-6, 4-2 (Big Ten) after the 4-3 loss to the Hawkeyes.

Playing in 50-degree weather at the outdoor Klotz Tennis Center, the 'Cats dropped the doubles point with losses at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions and split with the Hawkeyes in singles play.

No. 118 Tommy Hanus (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) lost to the Big Ten Player of the Week, No. 95 Stuart Waters, in the No. 1 singles spot.

Picking up victories for NU were seniors Jamie Sahara (Santa Maria, Calif./St. Joseph) and Ryan Edlefsen (Eden Prairie, Minn./Bloomington Jefferson) at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. For Edlefsen, the win ends a nine-match losing streak. Senior Joost Hol rounded out the upperclassmen sweep, winning his No. 6 match after three sets.

The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend as well, traveling to No. 20 Minnesota April 12 and No. 68 Wisconsin April 14.
