EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern entered Thursday's contest having won three of its last four. Notre Dame, meanwhile, came to Evanston having lost three of its last four.

It was the 10th-ranked Irish, though, who wasted no time in establishing who the better team was at Lakeside Field. Notre Dame scored five goals in the game's first seven minutes and never looked back in taking an 11-3 victory.

Danielle Shearer led the ND charge with four points (3g, 1a), while Meredith Simon had three points (2g, 1a) and three other players tallied two apiece.

Shearer set the tone for the game, connecting for a goal just 30 seconds into the contest. Alissa Moser would score two of the next four goals as the Irish raced out to the sizable advantage.

Northwestern outscored the Irish, 3-1, the rest of the half. In the 12th minute, Angela McMahon (Weston, Mass./Weston) converted a feed from Courtney Flynn (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle), and then five minutes after another ND goal Jenna Gantner (Long Valley, N.J./Chester) fired home a free-position goal. Sarah Albrecht (Braintree, Mass./Thayer Academy) closed out the first-half scoring on a solo effort with 6:01 left, and the teams went into the break with the Fighting Irish up, 6-3.

Notre Dame steadily built on its lead in the second stanza, as Shearer scored twice in a matter of 37 seconds in the 35th minute. The Fighting Irish then put the game away with three goals in the game's final 10 minutes.

Ashley Gersuk (Loudonville, N.Y./Albany Academy) came back with a strong game after a shaky start in goal. The freshmen made 13 saves, her second-best effort of the season. At the other end, Notre Dame's Jen White was forced to make just three stops.

The Wildcats are now off until next Saturday, May 4, when nationally ranked Vanderbilt comes to town for a 1 p.m. game. The Commodores recently clinched the inaugural ALC regular-season title.
