EVANSTON, Ill. - On a gorgeous day at Lakeside Field, Liz Drennan and Jeannie Crawley provided a solid 1-2 punch in the second half to lead 10th-ranked Vanderbilt to a 13-7 victory over Northwestern in American Lacrosse Conference action Saturday afternoon.
The game marked the end of the regular season for the Wildcats (5-10, 2-4 ALC). Vanderbilt (10-5, 6-0 ALC), which recently clinched the ALC title but lost to Notre Dame in overtime Friday, awaits word on a possible NCAA Championship bid Sunday.
The teams played tentatively in the first half, and that -- combined with poor shooting by Vandy -- kept the score low. The Commodores got a 3-0 lead over the first 16 minutes, before Northwestern responded with two of the last three goals before the break.
Vandy's Jess Roguski scored 1:46 into the second stanza to make it 5-2, before NU cut the lead to one thanks to Sarah Albrecht (Braintree, Mass./Thayer Academy). The freshman attacker scored on a solo effort, then fed Angela McMahon (Weston, Mass./Weston) just 15 seconds later for another goal.
At that point, Crawley and Drennan went on the attack. The duo combined for a goal less than a minute after McMahon's score, beginning a 5-0 Commodore run during which Crawley had two goals and one assist and Drennan had a goal and three assists.
Northwestern tried to answer with goals by Marit Spekman (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's-Belfield) and McMahon, before Crawley scored her third of the day. The Wildcats' final goal came on a free-position effort by Courtney Flynn (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) with 8:29 to play, but Vandy closed the game out with two goals in the final two minutes.
Both teams got good efforts out of their goalkeepers. For Northwestern, Ashley Gersuk (Loudonville, N.Y./Albany Academy) had 12 saves, while Vanderbilt got nine saves from Ashley Bastinelli (7 in 57 minutes) and Liz Exline (2 in 3 minutes).
