EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern's softball squad lost twice to No. 25 Ohio State Sunday at Sharon J. Drysdale Field. The Buckeyes took Game 1, 12-4 (6) and Game 2, 3-1. The losses drop the 'Cats to 17-12-1 overall and 6-4 in the Big Ten. OSU improves to 37-9 overall and 9-3 in the Big Ten.

Game 1 got out to a quick start with Erin Jancic belting her fourth home run of the year on the second pitch of the game. Carri Leto followed suit with her second of the year over the right field fence. The 'Cats were up 2-0 after the first.

OSU got into the long ball game in the second inning as Kristine Himes lifted a Lauren Schwendimann offering over the center field fence. Buckeye right fielder Wendy Allen tied the home run contest in the third with another shot out of the park.

As NU's bats remained silent for the next few innings, the Buckeyes added a single run in the fourth, two in the fifth and exploded for seven more in the sixth.

The 'Cats threatened in the sixth with two runs off singles by Rane Gunderson and Jancic, but NU left the bases full, still down by eight. The game ended after the sixth due to the eight-run rule.

Schwendimann began the game in the circle for the 'Cats. The junior surrendered nine earned runs on 14 Buckeye hits in five innings of work. Brie Brown came in on relief in the sixth. Brown gave up two hits and three earned runs.

Brown began Game 2 for NU, keeping the Big Ten's most explosive team in check for most of the game. She allowed six hits and only one extra base hit.

OSU took the early lead in the second game when a hit batsman came around to score in the first.

Freshman Erin Mobley went long to center in the fourth to knot the score 1-1. It was the second career home run for Mobley and the third of the day for NU.

The 'Cats loaded the bases in the sixth, but again were unable to come through with a clutch two-out hit.

OSU scored two in the bottom of the sixth to take the game 3-1 and win its fifth straight.

The 'Cats return to action on Wednesday with a doubleheader at No. 13 DePaul. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
