EVANSTON, Ill. - Four members of the Northwestern men's swimming team will compete March 28-30 at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga.
Sophomore All-American Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) will compete in three events: the 200 IM (seed time of 1:45.64), the 100 backstroke (47.63) and the 200 backstroke (1:42.94). Swanson took the Big Ten Conference title in the 200 IM and 200 back and finished second in the 100 back.
Mark Hamming (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and All-American Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep) will go head-to-head in three events. They join Swanson in the 200 IM (Hamming 1:47.58, O'Connor 1:47.62), and each will compete in the 100 butterfly (O'Connor 48.08, Hamming 48.25) and 200 butterfly (O'Connor 1:44.35, Hamming 1:46.06). O'Connor's times are school records in the fly events.
Senior Adam Kennedy (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) will compete in the 50 freestyle with a seed time of 19.96. Kennedy's mark is a school record set at the Big Ten Championships earlier this month.
With Swanson and O'Connor among the top ten national times in their signature events, it is likely that each will repeat last season's All-America performance. The last back-to-back All-American from the men's team was breastsroke swimmer Rob Rausch, who accomplished the feat in 1996 and 1997.
