HONOLULU - All-American pitcher Jocelyn Forest blanked the Northwestern softball squad 9-0 Sunday evening at the Chevron Invitational as No. 8 California avenged an earlier loss and claimed the tournament title. The 'Cats take second in the tournament with a weekend record of 5-2.
Forest, who was named Pitcher of the Tournament, pitched a one-hitter en route to her 14th win of the season. Carri Leto broke up the no-hitter with a single in the fourth.
The Bears jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with five runs-all unearned-on four hits and two NU errors in the first inning. Brie Brown began the game in the circle for the 'Cats but was relieved by Lauren Schwendimann midway through the first.
Schwendimann was named to the All-Tournament team. She was 3-0 on the weekend, pitching three complete games, including a four-hit shutout over Cal Saturday.
Erin Jancic was named the Player of the Tournament for her tournament-leading .571 batting average. The senior was 12-for-21 with three home runs, seven RBI and 10 runs.
The 'Cats record now stands at 9-7-1 (the three games versus Nittaidai do not count in the season totals) and will play Hawaii in a single game tomorrow at 5 p.m. HT.
