HONOLULU - Gretchen Barnes launched a three-run home run to left field in the third innings and Northwestern softball never looked back from there, run-ruling Nittaidai #2, 9-1, in semifinal action of the Chevron Invitational. The 'Cats will face the winner of the Hofstra/California game at 5 p.m. HT. for the championship.
Barnes and Cindy Muran each hit their second home runs of the tournament in the win, as the 'Cats out-hit the Japanese university, 10-5. Barnes was 2-for-3 at the plate, with four RBI and two runs. Erin Jancic continued her torrid offensive pace with a 2-for-3 effort, including three runs scored and an RBI. She currently leads the tournament field in batting for the weekend, hitting just under .600 for the six games.
The weakness of the weekend for 'Cats has been their fielding. They had to overcome three errors in today's game, giving them nine on the weekend.
Lauren Schwendimann earned her third win of the weekend. The junior allowed no earned runs and just five hits in the complete game.
