HONOLULU -
The Northwestern softball team improved to 9-6-1 on the year after defeating Hofstra, 2-0, Saturday night at the Chevron Invitational. The 'Cats earn the number one seed and a first round bye in the tournament play portion of the weekend which begins tomorrow. They will face the winner of the morning game between Nittaidai #1/#2.
Brie Brown earned the win, pitching six-plus innings. She struck out seven, while allowing just four hits. Lauren Schwendimann picked up her first safe of the year and a share of the shutout.
The 'Cats broke open the scoreless tie in the sixth inning with two runs on four hits. Erin Jancic started the inning with a single. Erin Mobley followed up with a blooper in front of the left fielder. Heads up running put Jancic on third. Carri Leto then brought Jancic across the plate on a single up the middle. NU added another on Schwendimann's RBI single to right field.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Pride had runners on second and third with one out when Schwendimann was brought in. The junior right-hander got the next two batters to pop up, giving NU the win.
The win was special for two NU assistant coaches, as Caryl Drohan coached the Pride for five seasons and Alicia Smith was an All-American at Hofstra two years ago.
