IOWA CITY, Iowa - Northwestern's men's swimming and diving team has taken a commanding lead over Big Ten foe Iowa in a two-day dual meet in Iowa City.

The Wildcats (5-1, 1-1 Big Ten) won seven of the 11 events in the evening session, including the first three, and lead, 106-78.

Several NCAA "B" times and season top times were set by NU swimmers, including sophomore Mark Hamming (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), who posted a "B" standard time of 1:47.81 in the 200 butterfly, a personal best. Hamming finished right behind teammate Kellan O'Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep), who won the event with a season-best time of 1:46.48. O'Connor had already earned a "B" standard time at the Michigan State meet.

Sophomore Tony Swanson (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids) posted three season-best times when he won the 200 freestyle (1:39.55), the 200 IM (1:48.62) and was the leadoff man for the victorious 200 free relay team (personal time: 20.98). His 200 IM time is also an NCAA "B" standard, but Swanson had previously qualified in that event.

Picking up his second victory of the season in the 1,650 free, sophomore Tommy Lockman (Savoy, Ill./Champaign Centennial) touched with a time of 15:50.98.

In the 100 breaststroke, sophomore Aaron McCracken (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) finished second but recorded a season-best time of 56.65. Freshman Nick Eggen (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) also posted a personal-best time with a third place finish in the 100 backstroke at 51.25.

Both relay teams, the 200 free and the 400 medley, edged out the competition and recorded season-best times. Each missed an NCAA "B" standard time by about one second.

Complete results will be available after Saturday's session, which begins at 11 a.m.
