Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Led by senior Gretchen Barnes' two home runs, Northwestern softball defeated Sacramento State, 8-1, in Day Two of the Campbell/Cartier Tournament in San Diego. The win ups NU's record to 4-5. They will have a chance to reach the .500 mark tomorrow when they play tournament host San Diego State at 9:30 a.m. EST.

The Hornets scored first with a run in the bottom of the third, but this is all that right-hander Lauren Schwendimann would allow. Schwendimann pitched seven complete innings, allowing one run on seven hits while striking out six. She has been in the circle for all four NU wins this season.

The 'Cats took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on the first of two Barnes home runs. For the game, Barnes was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and five RBI.

In the fifth, Brett Nakabayashi extended the lead, scoring from third on a squeeze play executed by Erin Jancic. Barnes stepped to the plate next. knocking in three more with her second round-tripper. This gave NU a 6-1 lead. NU added another two insurance runs in the seventh off the bat of Robyn Pettinger. Pettinger was 2-for-4 with two RBI against the Hornets.

Unlike yesterday when NU let its opponents come back from 8-1 deficits, the 'Cats held off the Hornets in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. The victory also avenged a 9-4 NU loss to Sacramento State from last year at this tournament.
