Tampa, Fla. - Led by the strong pitching performance of junior Lauren Schwendimann (Tustin, Calif./Foothill), the Northwestern softball team picked up its first win of the season, doing so against 25th-ranked South Florida, 6-2.
Schwendimann was given the start after pitching two scoreless innings in relief in the morning game against Florida Atlantic. This time in the circle, she only allowed three hits, two earned runs, while striking out seven.
The Wildcats' offense was hot all day, scoring eight runs in the morning and adding another six in the afternoon win. NU outhit the Bulls, 10-3, with three players earning multiple hits.
This time around, the 'Cats had to come from behind, as the Bulls scored a run in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0.
NU charged back in the third with two runs on an RBI single by senior Erin Jancic (Houston, Texas/Alief Elsik). On the day, Jancic was 5-7 with three RBI and two runs scored.
USF tied the game in the fourth on a throwing error by sophomore J.C. Kira (Honolulu, Hawaii), but junior Robyn Pettinger (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) picked her up with a two-run homer in the top of the next inning. The 'Cats scored four in the fifth to go on top for good at 6-2.
Next up for the 'Cats is Tennessee tomorrow at 11 a.m. EST. Their afternoon game will either be at 3:30 p.m. or 5:30 p.m., depending on the outcome of the round robin.
