EVANSTON, Ill. - Following last Saturday's 59-55 win at Kansas State, Northwestern head coach Bill Carmody talked to his team about the "vicissitudes of life-sometimes you're up, and sometimes you're down."

Sounds like a big word to describe a roller-coaster existence, but that would be an accurate portrayal of the Wildcats in their last three games. Ten days ago, the 'Cats dropped their first nonconference home game in more than two years, 56-53 to IUPUI. That was followed by last Saturday's result at Kansas State, which seemed to right the ship.

Nothing could have prepared Carmody or his staff for what happened Wednesday, though. Playing in front of a nationally televised audience, Northwestern looked flat and an extremely athletic N.C. State took advantage to roll to a 25-point victory.

"The thing that bothered me the most was that we did not play with any passion," Carmody said after the contest. "We looked scared out there, especially some of the upperclassmen. You need to have passion to win a game like that, especially against a team the caliber of N.C. State."

If there was good news coming out of Wednesday's game, it was the return of Winston Blake from an ankle injury. He played 19 minutes and should be fully healthy for today's contest.

Bowling Green and Northwestern are in similar situation, having lost key players to injury, including one apiece for the season. Today's game should be a good battle between teams trying to find the right mix as conference play rapidly approaches.
