EVANSTON, Ill. - Call Woody Allen. Get Robert DeNiro on the line. Or Billy Crystal. Or both. See if Billy Joel is available to score a soundtrack.
The Northwestern men's basketball team is in a New York state of mind. If filmmaker Kevin Smith can call his first three offbeat movies his "New Jersey Trilogy," then can the 'Cats call this their New York Trilogy?
Sunday's game tips off three straight contests against teams from the Empire State: Fordham, Buffalo (Dec. 30) and Long Island (Jan. 4). Fordham (Bronx) and LIU (Brooklyn) will represent the Big Apple, while Buffalo defends upstate N.Y.
The game is Northwestern's third in five days, but no doubt the Wildcats are anxious to get back on the floor. In its most recent outing, Thursday night's intra-city battle with Illinois-Chicago, NU was dominated on the glass and struggled to contain the Flames (28-of-48 from the field) in taking a 70-53 loss.
"This is going to be another physical game for us," said head coach Bill Carmody, who saw his team get outrebounded 42-15 Thursday by UIC. "We really need to get tougher as a team, especially on the boards. This is another game that will help us prepare for the rigors of the Big Ten."
Suddenly, conference play is something to concern the 'Cats. These next three games-which stretch right through Christmas into the New Year-also end the nonconference portion of the 2002-03 schedule for the Wildcats.
For now, though, NU loves New York.
