EVANSTON, Ill. - Head coach Bob Groseth has announced the signing of three individuals to National Letters of Intent to join the Northwestern University men's swimming and diving program beginning in the 2003-04 academic year.
The list includes Mike Alexandrov of Champaign, Ill., Kevin Donohue of Wakefield, R.I. and Matt Grevers of Lake Forest, Ill.
"We are very excited about this class," Groseth said. "This may be the best class in the history of Northwestern swimming. This group will raise the level of expectations for everyone in the Northwestern swimming program. We are excited about the direction our program is heading and feel that this incoming class can help us to continue fielding increasingly better teams to represent Northwestern University."
Alexandrov is currently a senior at Centenial High School in Champaign. Originally from Bulgaria, he is a member of the Bulgarian National Team. A versatile swimmer, Alexandrov's main stroke is breaststroke, but is capable of competing in all the stroke events. His performances last summer ranked him fourth in the 400 individual medley (4.25.27) and fifth in the 200 IM (2.04.93) in the age 15-17 world rankings.
Donohue swims for the Ocean Squids Swim Club under the direction of Josh Stern. He is an explosive athlete who specializes in the breaststroke. Donohue is a senior national qualifier in the breaststroke, having recorded personal-best times of 56.51 in the 100 yard breast, 2:05.58 in the 200 breast and 1.54.4 in the 200 IM. He holds a pair of New England breaststroke age group records.
Grevers swims for the Patriot Aquatics Swim Club and Lake Forest High, both coached by Lea Mauer, a former Olympic medallist and American record holder in the 100 backstroke. He is considered perhaps the top recruit in the country because of his range from the 50 to the 200 freestyle, as well as the backstroke events. He own the Illinois state record in the 100 free.
Grevers is not only potential threat in the collegiate and national ranks, but on a global scene as well. He is ranked in the top 10 in the world rankings for 15-17 year-olds in the 50 and 100 free and the 100 and 200 back. Grevers has recorded personal-best short course times 20.4 in the 50 free, 44.2 in the 100 yard free, 49.3 in the 100 back and 1.46.0 in the 200 back.
